What's Going on in the Cultural District?

Valley Gives Day - May 2, 2017

It's our first year participating in Valley Gives Day, orchestrated by member organization Community Foundation of Western MA, and we couldn't be more excited! This is an opportunity to share our work with you, hear what you want more of, and increase resources.

Take a minute to watch our video explaining our work, why it's important (to all people!) and why we need your support on May 2. Many of our member organizations are also participating in the giving day, and we hope you'll consider giving to them as well.

FutureCity/MA and FutureCity/Springfield

In July of 2016, the Springfield Central Cultural District entered a program funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and Boston Foundation to look at how to change arts and creative expression from nicety to necessity. We believe that the future of economic development lies in integration of placemaking into residential, commercial, and business ventures, and that to create a successful and equitable metro center, that we must focus on the arts.

This short video looks at what FutureCity/MA addressed, what we're already doing in the Cultural District, and how we can move forward during the renaissance of Downtown Springfield. It was produced in kind by Focus Springfield Community Television

So, What Do You Do?

The Springfield Central Cultural District is a growing initiative to bring arts and culture to Downtown Springfield!

Our mission is to bring more vitality to the city by highlighting its outstanding cultural offerings and adding new creative opportunities for artists and the greater community. We aim to make arts and culture in Springfield more accessible, while creating connections between artists, cultural landmarks, and visitors!

Past Projects

Utility Box Mural Program

Old First Church Organ Concert

The SCCD presented a free organ concert in historic Old First Church in November 2016. More concerts coming soon!

The purpose of this program was to both show how beautiful and versatile the space is, as well as provide income to local artists through this program. We weren't just putting on an event – we were showing the potential in this historic building and hoping to encourage future activity in not just Old First Church, but throughout unexpected spaces in the Cultural District.

Over 26 colorful pieces of art can be found on unexpected canvases throughout the District - utility boxes!

The purpose of this project was two-fold: first, to beautify the streets and create unique and interesting pedestrian sights; second, to provide economic opportunity to local artists who are trying to make a living creating art in Springfield. We see this project in its final step as a huge, free outdoor gallery that is accessible to anyone, regardless of social or income status.
