What's Going on in the Cultural District?
Painted Pianos Project
We've placed three pianos in unexpected places - 1350 Main Street, 1550 Main Street, and Market Place! They have been donated, painted and decorated by local artists, and now it's your turn to try something artistic - stop by on a walk and play a few keys!
Throughout July and August, musicians will be playing mini-concerts at all three locations every Wednesday from 12-1 during lunch, for free, rain or shine!
The purpose of this program is to both activate the streetscape of Downtown Springfield with music and bright art, but to also increase opportunities for artist income. The creative economy is the backbone of not just Springfield, but Massachusetts as a whole.
This project is supported by the Springfield Cultural Council, Community Music School of Springfield, and ChooseSpringfieldMass.Com, but we're still looking for help to hire musicians during the day. More info can be found on the Projects page.
Art Stop(s) is Back!
It's back again! The flagship program of the Springfield Central Cultural District, Art Stop(s), a pop-up gallery program, is returning to Downtown Springfield on August 2.
We have five total pop-up galleries, which will be connected by programming and jazz-themed buskers (our tip-of-the-hat to the Springfield Jazz and Roots Fest!). Don't forget to swing into the permanent galleries and cultural highlights between the Stops.
At each gallery, a full reception will take place, with the artist on site to answer questions and sell their work. Full schedule and details are on the projects page!

Utility Box Mural Program
Old First Church Organ Concert
The SCCD presented a free organ concert in historic Old First Church in November 2016. More concerts coming soon!
The purpose of this program was to both show how beautiful and versatile the space is, as well as provide income to local artists through this program. We weren't just putting on an event – we were showing the potential in this historic building and hoping to encourage future activity in not just Old First Church, but throughout unexpected spaces in the Cultural District.
Over 26 colorful pieces of art can be found on unexpected canvases throughout the District - utility boxes!
The purpose of this project was two-fold: first, to beautify the streets and create unique and interesting pedestrian sights; second, to provide economic opportunity to local artists who are trying to make a living creating art in Springfield. We see this project in its final step as a huge, free outdoor gallery that is accessible to anyone, regardless of social or income status.
The success of the Springfield Central Cultural District is in large part due to our spectacular members - they make it possible to spread our mission, vision, and programs!
